Fun Fact Friday – Year of the Gorilla!

2009 is the year of the Gorilla. Below is our Splash! Mountain Gorilla. Did you know that there are roughly 700 mountain gorillas remaining on Earth? This fragile population continues to face major threats from habitat loss and a recent increase in poaching. We need to help protect these endangered animals so we will not lose them. Remember, extinct means forever. What can you do to help?

Fun Fact Friday

Who would win in a fight between  a meerkat and a poisonous snake?

Answer: A meerkat would win! Meerkats are known for their daring diet. They are able to kill and eat poisonous snakes and scorpions without being hurt, because they are immune to the venom. They eat poisonous scorpions by quickly biting off their stingers, and then eating the rest! Now that’s stinger-lickin’ good.

Fun Fact Friday – Lions

This one's for the Leos!

This one's for the Leos!

Today is all about Lions! The male is referred to as a lion or tom and the female is referred to as a lioness. The baby lion is a cub. Did you know that the lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides? Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen females, and their young. The females do most of the hunting and cub rearing, just like our families! Have a great weekend!

Fun Fact Friday – Orangutans!

The Splash! Orangutan

The name “orangutan” translates into English as “man of the forest”. It comes from Malay and Bahasa Indonesian orang (man) and hutan (forest).  Orangutans are highly intelligent and use tools such as chewing up leaves to create sponges and using branches and sticks to test the depth of water before entering.  The Sumatran species is critically endangered with an estimate of only 7,200 individuals remaining in the wild. Have a great weekend and let us know if you find other fun or important facts about this amazing animal.
